The New Rules of Affluence: What UHNW individuals Expect from Premium Memberships

The New Rules of Affluence: What UHNW individuals Expect from Premium Memberships

New Visa research reveals what very wealthy consumers expect from premium services, from privacy and personalisation to global access and travel support.

Luxury is changing beyond the price tag

For a long time, premium services were often defined by access: exclusive lounges, priority bookings, preferred rates and special privileges.

But expectations among wealthy consumers are changing. Access still matters, but so does the quality of the relationship behind the service.

Visa's June 2026 report, The New Rules of Affluence, explores how ultra-high-net-worth individuals are redefining premium experiences. Its findings point towards four clear expectations: time, convenience, privacy and services that reflect personal interests.

The scale of the change is also connected to wealth transfer. Visa cites an estimated €62.3 trillion expected to pass to younger, digitally native generations by 2045. This is not simply a transfer of money. It represents a shift in the expectations of future premium consumers.

Personal relevance matters more than a long list of benefits

Visa's research found that 47% of ultra-high-net-worth respondents considered universal acceptance the most important feature of a premium card. Around one in four also identified gaps in card acceptance as a major frustration.

The report also found that:

  • 78% value services related to health
  • 72% value sporting or cultural experiences
  • 77% value services connected to their travel interests

A membership offering dozens of unrelated privileges may look impressive on paper. But a smaller number of relevant services, supported by a reliable relationship, may be more useful in practice.

Privacy is part of the premium experience

Privacy is not simply about keeping information confidential. It also concerns how a service interacts with a client.

A member may want a request handled without unnecessary exposure of personal details. They may prefer one established point of contact rather than repeatedly explaining their preferences to different providers.

This creates an important distinction between a conventional booking service and a membership relationship.

A booking service responds to a transaction. A membership model can build an understanding of the member over time, subject to consent, appropriate data handling and the actual scope of the service.

Why membership is becoming a different proposition

A premium membership should offer more than a card or a collection of discounts. Its value comes from the relationship, the services available and the way requests are handled.

For international travellers, this can include transportation, close protection, travel assistance, concierge arrangements and access to suitable local providers.

The important question is not how many benefits appear in a brochure. It is whether the membership can support the member's actual requirements.

Sterling's approach to membership

Sterling Protection Partners follows a membership-led model designed around individual requirements and coordinated services.

Members establish a profile and can submit requests based on their travel plans, personal preferences and circumstances. Sterling reviews each request and coordinates suitable services through its network, subject to destination, provider availability and agreed scope.

The Sterling Membership Card serves as a physical membership credential. It is designed to support discreet identification without displaying unnecessary personal information.

Membership and service charges are treated separately. The annual membership fee establishes the membership relationship, while requested services are assessed and charged according to their agreed scope. Eligible services may also qualify for Sterling's Deferred Settlement Privilege, subject to the applicable terms.
